Also, have an energy-efficiency professional come to your home and perform an energy assessment. This assessment could be either conducting a walk-through of your home with a clipboard or performing a thorough audit, pressurizing your home with a blower-door test to detect energy leaks. You may qualify for state discounts or rebates to have insulation installed in your home. Some utility companies also subsidize the cost of these energy efficiency assessments.
The federal government is phasing out Freon to conserve energy across the nation. Because of this, Freon costs are increasing significantly. If your AC unit uses Freon, eventually you’ll need to replace it to make the switch to the new R410A refrigerant. It’s most likely a good time to consider a replacement if your unit is breaking down or has problems associated with needing more Freon.

The heat pump gained popularity in the 1950s in Japan and the United States.[13] Heat pumps can extract heat from various sources, such as environmental air, exhaust air from a building, or from the ground. Initially, heat pump HVAC systems were only used in moderate climates, but with improvements in low temperature operation and reduced loads due to more efficient homes, they are increasing in popularity in cooler climates.
To be honest, an HVAC technician’s work goes beyond more than installation, maintenance and repair. Most people are increasingly spending more time inside the home, so indoor air quality, home energy savings and total comfort have become even more important. There are several choices and solutions when it comes to HVAC systems, and our experts will consult with you every step of the way and work with you to achieve your goals.
If you believe that the ac not working or you’re getting little or no cold air, check these three things first. Make sure all the registers in the house are wide open. Then be sure the furnace filter is clean. Then go outside and clean off the condenser coils (Photo 2). If several registers were closed or the filter was clogged, the reduced airflow could have caused the evaporator coil to ice up and stop cooling your home. If you’ve changed the filter and opened all the registers and you’re still not getting airflow at the registers, deice the A-coil. Move the thermostat mode switch from “Cooling” to “Off” and move the fan switch from “Auto” to “On.” Let the blower run for at least 30 minutes or until there’s good airflow at the registers. Then turn the AC back on to test it. If it works for the next 12 hours, you’ve solved the problem.
Compare replacement and repair costs: A new boiler or furnace is a substantial investment, but repair costs can also become costly as well. Not to mention, there’s always the possibility of the same issue occurring again or the need for more work in the future. You may want to replace your heating system if the repairs exceed half of the replacement costs.
While there's nothing you can do to guarantee your air conditioner or furnace will never need repairs, there are ways to take better care of your system. Changing out the air filters every 3-6 months, making sure nothing is obstructing or interfering with the outside unit, and keeping all vents unblocked in well-used rooms will help keep your air conditioning and heating system operating efficiently.

Heaters exist for various types of fuel, including solid fuels, liquids, and gases. Another type of heat source is electricity, normally heating ribbons composed of high resistance wire (see Nichrome). This principle is also used for baseboard heaters and portable heaters. Electrical heaters are often used as backup or supplemental heat for heat pump systems.

Multiple inventions within this time frame preceded the beginnings of first comfort air conditioning system, which was designed in 1902 by Alfred Wolff (Cooper, 2003) for the New York Stock Exchange, while Willis Carrier equipped the Sacketts-Wilhems Printing Company with the process AC unit the same year. Coyne College was the first school to offer HVAC training in 1899.[12]

The liquid refrigerant is returned to another heat exchanger where it is allowed to evaporate, hence the heat exchanger is often called an evaporating coil or evaporator. As the liquid refrigerant evaporates it absorbs energy (heat) from the inside air, returns to the compressor, and repeats the cycle. In the process, heat is absorbed from indoors and transferred outdoors, resulting in cooling of the building.

The changing seasons take a toll on your HVAC equipment. Unfortunately, it always seems that your aging furnace gives up in the middle of a cold snap and your AC unit sputters out during the hottest day of summer. These events are more than an annoyance: they can quickly turn into emergencies when your home reaches extreme temperatures. That's when it's time to call in your local ARS®/Rescue Rooter® HVAC specialist, who has the training to get to the root of any heating, ventilation or air conditioning problem quickly.

Even if your air conditioning unit is still working, depending on the type of system in your home today, you could recoup your investment in a new system in as little as three years. However, that doesn't mean that your system needs to be replaced. Furnaces, air conditioners, and other heating and cooling systems have made tremendous gains in efficiency over the past five years, so if you have an older unit, it is worth taking a look at whether or not a repair is the best investment.

"Working with W.E.C.'s office, I had quotes emailed to me quickly for a couple of different replacement options (which I chose to do instead of sinking money into the junk one) and within two days I had a brand new heat pump system installed. The installers were clean, careful with the installation and also very honest about options for the system that could be installed down the road (UV Lamp) but not pushy at all."
Replacing a capacitor is easy. Just take a photo of the wires before disconnecting anything (you may need a reference later on). Then discharge the stored energy in the old capacitor (Photo 4). Use needle-nose pliers to pluck one wire at a time from the old capacitor and snap it onto the corresponding tab of the new capacitor. The female crimp connectors should snap tightly onto the capacitor tabs. Wiggle each connector to see if it’s tight. If it’s not, remove the connector and bend the rounded edges of it so it makes a tighter fit on the tab. When you’ve swapped all the wires, secure the new capacitor (Photo 5).

Central controllers and most terminal unit controllers are programmable, meaning the direct digital control program code may be customized for the intended use. The program features include time schedules, setpoints, controllers, logic, timers, trend logs, and alarms. The unit controllers typically have analog and digital inputs that allow measurement of the variable (temperature, humidity, or pressure) and analog and digital outputs for control of the transport medium (hot/cold water and/or steam). Digital inputs are typically (dry) contacts from a control device, and analog inputs are typically a voltage or current measurement from a variable (temperature, humidity, velocity, or pressure) sensing device. Digital outputs are typically relay contacts used to start and stop equipment, and analog outputs are typically voltage or current signals to control the movement of the medium (air/water/steam) control devices such as valves, dampers, and motors.

Your system is 10 - 15 years old: Follow this simple rule of thumb from Energy Star—if your current system is over 10 years old, it's time to start looking into an HVAC replacement. Most HVAC systems last for about 15 years, so there’s no immediate need to replace yours if it’s still functioning properly. But by doing your research now, you’ll know just what you want to do should your HVAC system suddenly stop working properly.
Ground source, or geothermal, heat pumps are similar to ordinary heat pumps, but instead of transferring heat to or from outside air, they rely on the stable, even temperature of the earth to provide heating and air conditioning. Many regions experience seasonal temperature extremes, which would require large-capacity heating and cooling equipment to heat or cool buildings. For example, a conventional heat pump system used to heat a building in Montana's −70 °F (−57 °C) low temperature or cool a building in the highest temperature ever recorded in the US—134 °F (57 °C) in Death Valley, California, in 1913 would require a large amount of energy due to the extreme difference between inside and outside air temperatures. A few feet below the earth's surface, however, the ground remains at a relatively constant temperature. Utilizing this large source of relatively moderate temperature earth, a heating or cooling system's capacity can often be significantly reduced. Although ground temperatures vary according to latitude, at 6 feet (1.8 m) underground, temperatures generally only range from 45 to 75 °F (7 to 24 °C).

"I recently reached out to 5 STAR HVAC for an estimate/quote to install a new 4 ton furnace for my 2 story home. Thanks to Yelpers and the wonderful reviews for 5 Star, I now have a new go to company for my A/C and Heater needs! Not only was the estimate very reasonable, but the Technician "Jose" was very professional and gave great advice and service options for me."
A contactor is a $25 mechanical relay that uses low-voltage power from the thermostat to switch 220-volt high-amperage current to the compressor and condenser fan. AC contactors can wear out and are at the top of the list of common air conditioning service failures. Even if your contactor is working, it pays to replace it every five years or so. Unscrew the old contactor before removing the wires. Then move the wires to the new unit (photo 6).
