Should I repair or replace my HVAC? It’s a common question — and you need to weigh several factors to make the decision. One of the most significant factors is the lifespan of your unit. According to EnergyStar — a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency voluntary program — an A.C. unit lasts about 15 to 20 years. On average, a heat pump perseveres for 16 years and a furnace functions for between 15 to 20 years, reports This Old House.
Beyond changing the air filter on a regular basis, one of the best ways to ensure your home's HVAC system is operating at peak efficiency is to have a qualified professional HVAC contractor tune up the system on a biannual basis. Energy Star recommends scheduling your system tune-up around the beginning of daylight savings time in the fall and its end in the spring. It's an easy way to remember to have your system serviced before the peak heating and cooling seasons. A standard tune-up is likely to cost you between $70 and $100, but it's money well spent.
"I recently reached out to 5 STAR HVAC for an estimate/quote to install a new 4 ton furnace for my 2 story home. Thanks to Yelpers and the wonderful reviews for 5 Star, I now have a new go to company for my A/C and Heater needs! Not only was the estimate very reasonable, but the Technician "Jose" was very professional and gave great advice and service options for me."
An HVAC service contract can be a very cost-effective way to make sure your system is properly maintained and to have someone on call when things go wrong. Depending on the amount of services offered, they cost between $150 and $500 per year, but they often include yearly inspections of both your furnace and A/C, discounts on major repairs, and preferred scheduling status when you have problems during the busy season.

More complex HVAC systems can interface to Building Automation System (BAS) to allow the building owners to have more control over the heating or cooling units. The building owner can monitor the system and respond to alarms generated by the system from local or remote locations. The system can be scheduled for occupancy or the configuration can be changed from the BAS. Sometimes the BAS is directly controlling the HVAC components. Depending on the BAS different interfaces can be used.[2]

As another reviewer said, NRG has good prices. Shop around and you'll see. My AC wasn't working, so I had them take a look.  It was totally shot (36 year old unit!) and they quoted me a reasonable price for a new one, so I decided to move forward with it also and one for my mom who lives nearby.   In the midst of a heat wave, they estimated they would be able to get the new unit installed by the middle of the next week.  The quick turnaround was possible because they have 8 crews, they explained. On the day of the job, the workers arrived on time and were courteous and professional.  They got a crane to lift the unit on my roof and replace it with a new unit in a matter of hours.   My mom had a similar experience - very professional. We would highly recommend NRG for air conditioner installs.  They have reasonable prices and do a good job.
In variable climates, the system may include a reversing valve that switches from heating in winter to cooling in summer. By reversing the flow of refrigerant, the heat pump refrigeration cycle is changed from cooling to heating or vice versa. This allows a facility to be heated and cooled by a single piece of equipment by the same means, and with the same hardware.
Natural ventilation is the ventilation of a building with outside air without using fans or other mechanical systems. It can be via operable windows, louvers, or trickle vents when spaces are small and the architecture permits. In more complex schemes, warm air is allowed to rise and flow out high building openings to the outside (stack effect), causing cool outside air to be drawn into low building openings. Natural ventilation schemes can use very little energy, but care must be taken to ensure comfort. In warm or humid climates, maintaining thermal comfort solely via natural ventilation might not be possible. Air conditioning systems are used, either as backups or supplements. Air-side economizers also use outside air to condition spaces, but do so using fans, ducts, dampers, and control systems to introduce and distribute cool outdoor air when appropriate.

The most recognized standards for HVAC design are based on ASHRAE data. The most general of four volumes of the ASHRAE Handbook is Fundamentals; it includes heating and cooling calculations. Each volume of the ASHRAE Handbook is updated every four years. The design professional must consult ASHRAE data for the standards of design and care as the typical building codes provide little to no information on HVAC design practices; codes such as the UMC and IMC do include much detail on installation requirements, however. Other useful reference materials include items from SMACNA, ACGIH, and technical trade journals.

Ventilation is the process of changing or replacing air in any space to control temperature or remove any combination of moisture, odors, smoke, heat, dust, airborne bacteria, or carbon dioxide, and to replenish oxygen. Ventilation includes both the exchange of air with the outside as well as circulation of air within the building. It is one of the most important factors for maintaining acceptable indoor air quality in buildings. Methods for ventilating a building may be divided into mechanical/forced and natural types.[16]
How often you should clean your air ducts depends on your situation. If you or someone in the home has asthma or is acutely allergic to certain airborne materials or pollen, regular duct cleaning may be helpful. The Environmental Protection Agency doesn’t have an official position on the necessity of air duct cleaning unless the ducts have been contaminated by rodents, insects or mold, or you are aware of particles blowing out through the vents. The EPA recommends you have your air ducts cleaned on an as-needed basis. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) suggests having air ducts cleaned every three to five years.
